1. Work on your Summary of Events. Keep up to date with it because you need four facts per chapter.
2. Write down new information learned in Chapters 9-14 about these characters: Rupert, Jan, Jean, and George
3. For each of the following headings, explain what each means, what characters are involved, why these things are important, and predictions of what their influence may have on future events.
a. Category Purple: What is it? Why are people placed in it? What “type” of people are placed in it?
b. “The most important human being alive”. Who is it and why is this person so important?
c. The consequences of Jan’s “mission” that he didn’t think through before he took his trip.
d. Explain why, as Karellen says, “The planets you may one day possess…”. How will we be able to possess the planets?
e. Explain why, as Karellen finishes, “…but the stars are not for man.” Why can’t we control the stars? Why aren’t they for man if the planets are?
4. For homework: complete the journal on the Wikispace journal assignments page entitled “Application of Power”.

Make sure you are caught up with Part 2 because we’re taking a quiz on it on Tuesday.

Tuesday, November 10, 2009
1. Wikispace journal assignment: “Where do we go from here?”
2. Quiz on Part 2
3. Chapter 10: earth’s evolution. Refer back to notes on Chapter 6 regarding the changes in Earth over the last 50 years. Using those same topics, use Chapter 10 to indicate how much more the earth has changed in this section.
4. Work on Concepts Essay. See Wikipage for instructions.

Homework: Write at least 3 questions or comments with explanations.

Wednesday, November 11, 2009
1. Review and work on the concepts essay. Have five total by the end of the class.
2. Reread Chapter 14 with the press conference. Answer these questions:

  • Describe what humans see when they look at the Overlords. Make a list of the items referenced in the paragraph before the conference begins and the paragraph that talks about Karellen's smile.
  • Why does Karellen spend so little time on WHO the stowaway is and HOW he manages to do it?
  • Why did the Overlords restrict man to Earth?
  • From what do we need protection?
3. The Golden Age. That's the title of Part 2. Do some word association. When you hear the word "golden", what do you think of? Make a list of as many references as you can. Then reread the last four paragraphs on page 137. What tone is set by Karellen's words and thoughts?
4. Do you think Karellen knew of Jan’s plan to stowaway before he got into the whale? Explain specifically why you believe the way you do. Use information from the book and speculation about the future to explain.
5. Predict what you think will happen in the last section of the book based upon the end of Chapter 14.

Thursday, November 12, 2009

1. Hand in your Cast of Characters sheet for Part 2
2. Overview of Part 3: Many people on Earth become bored and some decide to form a society of their own which gets the minds of humans moving again. This society's focus is one of the creative arts and sciences. People who have certain specialities are recruited to live there so the minds of mankind are preserved. George and Jean (who are now married with two kids -- Jeffery and Jennifer Anne or "The Poppet" as is her nickname) are recruited to live there and decide to move in. Chapter 15 describes how the society works.
3. Read Chapter 15 in class.
4. Read Chapters 16 & 17 for homework.

For Tuesday, read 18-20.

1. Expand your knowledge day. In Part 3, we are introduced to New Athens and New Sparta. Hopefully the names of these cities sound familiar in a historical context. Do some simple searching. Compare the historical Athens and Sparta to New Athens and New Sparta. Research the historical cities • Find information about Athens and Sparta (government, laws, philosophies, successes, etc.) • Find information about tsunami destruction (causes, warning time, survival rate, destruction, etc.) • Browse the newest toy for kids this Christmas called Mindflex where kids have to use their mind power to move things. List as many possible connections as you can to what you read so far in Part 3.
2. In reference to Chapter 16, explain what happens on the island with the tsunami. Whose life is threatened? What happens? What "fear" is now created?
FOR TUESDAY: Read Chapters 18-20.
